Climate Awards, Candidates among Solutions Conference Highlights Clean Air - Cool Planet honored an individual, two communities, a campus and a youth movement with Climate Champion awards at its third climate solutions conference Oct. 12 and 13th here. More than 500 people attended the conference at the Center of New Hampshire, where they heard a range of speakers and panels address energy and economic challenges of creating lasting solutions to global warming - and Republican and Democratic Presidential candidates.
Mt. Wachusett State College won the campus leadership award. The members of ReEnergize NH also won an award for their organizing work resulting in Step It Up climate action events across New Hampshire last spring. More than a dozen members of the youth group were on hand to receive the award, which was presented Saturday morning by writer/activist Bill McKibben, one of the keynote speakers at the conference. Former Arkansas Governor and Republican Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee announced his support for a cap-and-trade solution to carbon emissions at the conference, a statement that attracted national media attention. Conference participants also heard candidates New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Arizona Senator John McCain, and Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich. New Mexico Congressman Tom Udall, a congressional leader on global warming legislation, also spoke. Professor Berrien Moore, director of the UNH Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space, presented the update on climate science at the conference, which opened with announcement that the Nobel Peace Prize had been awarded to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and former Vice President Al Gore.
