Jennifer Andrews, Campus Program Manager Jenn advises stakeholders at colleges, universities and private K-12 schools across the US on how to measure and manage their greenhouse gas emissions, using CA-CP's Campus Carbon Calculator and other institutional tools. Before coming to CA-CP as an intern in 2001, she did work in public radio, as an historic and environmental educator for children, and as a group leader for growth-oriented intergenerational writing workshops. Jenn studied English as an undergraduate at the University of New Hampshire and mental health counseling as a graduate student there. Recently, she helped co-found a Young Professionals Association in her community, which seeks to provide resources for professional development and nurture civic leadership in up-and-coming young (21-40) leaders; she serves as chair of that organization's Education Committee.
Lindsay is pursuing a masters degree in Environmental Science and Management at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. As a CA-CP intern, she will assist in the development of a Local Action Plan for the City and the facilitation of neighborhood visioning sessions. Prior to joining CA-CP, Lindsay worked in watershed protection, particularly with rural landowners. She holds a BA in Environmental Studies from Allegheny College, Meadville, PA.
Bill Burtis came to CA-CP in December, 2002 from the NH Governor’s office of Energy and Community Services, where he was the Communications Coordinator. Along with policy expertise, he brings an extensive background in environmental communications and journalism—working previously as a writer and producer for the Environmental Hazards Institute, as senior staff in the communications office at the University of New Hampshire, as a freelance science and environment writer, and a journalist with the Newhouse and Gannett newspapers. Bill holds an MFA from the Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa, and a B.A. in English. He is a father of three who heats with wood and cooks with gas in his Lee, New Hampshire home. Akilah Campbell, Northeast Science Center Collaborative Akilah recently finished her B.S. in Wildlife Management, with a Wildlife Biologist Certification, and a B.M. in Music Education from the University of New Hampshire. As a CA-CP Fellow, she will help to update the Climate Change Backpack, as well as create a mid-Atlantic version of the backpack. She will also work on developing case studies for the mid-Atlantic region. Her previous experience includes working as a park interpretive ranger for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, a project manager for the Louise S. Wold Conservation Land in Madison, N.H., and as a park naturalist in Watchung, N.J. Elizabeth Compitello, Community Climate Fellow, New York State Liz Compitello is completing a Master's in Urban and Regional Planning at the University at Albany with a concentration in land use planning. Her in-progress thesis titled “Local Government Response to Climate Change in New York State,” includes case studies of the regional effort to respond to climate change in New York’s Hudson Valley. She has worked as an intern for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority for the last two years and just began an internship with the NY Department of Environmental Conservation to work on a best practices toolkit for local government response to climate change in New York State.
Michael has spent the last 17 years working in Africa in humanitarian relief and development. For 12 of those years he worked for the International Rescue Committee — most recently as the Regional Director for the Great Lakes Region overseeing program activities in Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and the Republic of Congo. Michael spent six years in eastern DRC as the country director overseeing a broad range of humanitarian and development programs. He has also worked for the International Medical Corps in Angola, and Action against Hunger-USA in Rwanda. He began his overseas work as a Peace Corps volunteer in Gabon. Michael has a B.S in Electrical Engineering, a B.A. in General Arts and Science, and a Masters in International Management.
Hillary Harnett is completing her B.A. at Brown University with concentrations in International Relations and Hispanic Studies and a focus on global environmental problems. She is interested in climate change, environmental justice, and law, and has previously interned with legal aid organizations in New York and Madrid. This summer, Hillary will develop case studies that document the achievements of Clean Air – Cool Planet's partner organizations in reducing their carbon footprints. She is excited to join CA-CP through the Summer Fellows Program at New Sector Alliance, a Boston-based organization.
Sarah is a climate fellow working on the Cool Monadnock Project, a regional, multi-sector initiative to assist 35 towns in developing effective strategies to save energy costs and address climate change. She has also worked with a Clean Air-Cool Planet project, the Keene 10% Challenge, which assists local small businesses in saving energy. Sarah is interested in sustainable community development through local enterprise and participatory democracy as well as sound national and international policy and development initiatives. She has a BA in Anthropology and Latin American Studies and Master’s degrees in Theological Studies, Divinity, and Environmental Advocacy and Organizing. She has experience in the non-profit sector in the Dominican Republic and has worked in education, libraries, and public services. Kay Harrison, Communications Associate / Webmaster Before joining CA-CP in January 2008, Kay was Website Editor for the Tree Care Industry Association, a nonprofit trade association for tree care companies, where she managed a complete site redesign and established a new website offering tree care information for consumers. Previously, she served as the communications associate and webmaster for an emerging technology company developing air pollution controls. Along with website development experience, Kay brings writing and editing skills and a background in corporate communications and journalism. She holds a B.A. degree in American Studies from Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut. Kay is active in the New Hampshire Writers’ Project and serves on the board of directors for the New Hampshire Ski Club. Hope Hurley, Climate Policy Center Fellow - Washington, D.C. Hope joined Clean Air-Cool Planet as a summer intern in 2008. She attends Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, and is a double major in Environmental Studies and Communications, with a minor in Spanish. Prior to college, she took a gap year and traveled to Central America for community and environmental service projects, and Spanish language immersion. She also spent several months on the Canary Islands volunteering with the Atlantic Whale Foundation on a research conservation project for Pilot Whales. Hope is currently working on her certification to conduct energy efficiency audits for commercial businesses.
Karin is the coordinator of the Northeast Science Center Collaborative. She has a Bachelor's in Animal Science, a Master's in Environmental Conservation Studies/Marine Policy and a Certificate in Conservation Biology. She is currently an environmental studies doctoral candidate and a Donnella Meadows Fellow. She held Adjunct Professorship teaching appointments at Gateway Community College and Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, as well as at Sacred Heart University in Bridgeport. Prior to these appointments, Karin had more than eight years experience working in museums and science centers including the American Museum of Natural History, the New York Aquarium, the Newark Museum and the Staten Island Zoo. She has been a naturalist/guide in both New York's Central Park, Cape Cod, and in Alaska. She lives in Connecticut with her husband and two dogs.
Christa Koehler was a City Planner for Keene, New Hampshire, where she performed a broad array of planning and development tasks including the development of comprehensive plans and review of development proposals. One of Christa’s primary duties was to coordinate and run the Cities for Climate Protection program in Keene where she worked on implementing a Local Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Christa earned her B.A. in Political Science at Pace University and her M.S. in Resource Management and Administration at Antioch New England Graduate School. Her research has centered on how comprehensive planning can curtail the advent of climate change in the northeast. Christa is an adjunct professor at Antioch New England Graduate School and is the Vice President of the New Hampshire Planners Association. Dovev Levine is a Ph.D. candidate in Natural Resources and Environmental Studies, and a Lecturer in Climate Policy, both at the University of New Hampshire. His fields of research include campus-based climate actions and multilevel environmental governance. He is currently the admissions officer for the Graduate School of the University of New Hampshire.
Ryan Mack, Community/Campus Climate Fellow - Providence, RI Ryan is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Environmental Management at the University of San Francisco in California. Through the Climate Fellows program with Clean Air – Cool Planet, Ryan will be coordinating the development of a Climate Action Plan as well as supporting the establishment of reduction targets and strategies with the City Government of Providence, RI. As a former Peace Corps volunteer, Ryan collaborated with local residents, businesses and city government to design and implement a citywide solid waste management program. Having received his B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz, Ryan has also worked with NGO's such as Natural Resources Defense Council and California Certified Organic Farmers. Prior to arriving in Providence, Ryan managed the recycling, composting and outreach programs at the University of San Francisco. Adam Markham, Chief Executive Officer Before being appointed as CA-CP’s founding Executive Director in February, 2000, Adam directed the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) international climate campaign, based in Washington DC. He spent 12 years with WWF, based in Switzerland and then the US, and in addition to his climate work helped design and manage campaigns on tropical forests and on toxic chemicals. Mr. Markham received his B.Sc. (hons.) from the University of Wales at Swansea, in the UK, where he studied zoology. He worked as a journalist and then on acid rain and ozone layer campaigns for Friends of the Earth in London. He has written and edited several books including A Brief History of Pollution (St. Martins) and Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Tropical Forest Ecosystems (Kluwer). He was a contributing author to the forest impacts chapter of the 1995 IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report, contributed material on biodiversity impacts of climate change to the US National Assessment and has published on climate change and biodiversity in journals including Bioscience, Climate Research, Climatic Change and Parks.
Brenda maintains the financial records for Clean Air-Cool Planet. Brenda has been a CPA since 1988 and has previously worked with non-profit organizations as an auditor with Howe, Riley and Howe in Manchester, NH. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from New Hampshire College. In her spare time, Brenda serves on the Epping Municipal Budget Committee and her neighborhood homeowners' association, and spends time with her husband and two daughters.
Kenold started his career in Haiti, working for non-governmental organizations such as the United Nations Development Program in the areas of natural resource inventory and consultancy and evaluation of community development projects. Kenold is a co-founder and Executive Officer of Group Supporting the Enhancement and Development of Peasant Families, a nonprofit based in Haiti. He also co-founded the Enterprise for Valuing Municipal Waste of Haiti (EVd’H) to help local stakeholders deal with municipal waste. Kenold has a B.S. degree in Natural Resource and Environmental Management from the State University of Haiti. He is currently a fellow of the Fulbright Scholarship Program/U.S. Department of State, pursuing a Master’s Degree at Antioch University New England in Resource Management and Conservation. He is now working on a magazine (HaitiEco-MAG) to better convey environmental issues to the Haitian community. Kenold is married and has two children.
Amanda works with the Executive Director to raise funds for Clean Air - Cool Planet. Prior to joining CA-CP in February 2007, Amanda worked as a museum educator at an historic house in New York State and as the development coordinator at CancerCare of Connecticut, where she planned and executed a variety of fundraisers and worked on foundation proposals, media relations and donor cultivation. Amanda holds a B.A. in English from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. An avid reader with a lifelong interest in writing, she currently resides in Norwalk, CT.
William B. Newman Jr. works on business and Congressional outreach. He is the former Vice President and Washington Counsel for Consolidated Rail Corporation, and former Counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce.
Kevin J. Parker works on development and fundraising issues. He most recently served is the director of foundation relations at the Worldwatch Institute, and over the past 20 years has worked in fundraising for organizations including Environmental Defense, the World Resources Institute, and Conservation International.
Pam Pearson, Director of European Office Pam Pearson, the Director of CA-CP’s European Office in southern Sweden, is a former U.S. diplomat with 20 years’ experience working on global issues, including climate change and various initiatives on the environmental and social policies of the multilateral development banks. Following the initial break-up of the former Soviet Union, she helped design some of the earliest environment and health programs in the Newly Independent States, in particular focused on the Aral Sea and Chernobyl clean-up, while on detail with U.S.AID. She has been stationed in Stockholm, Latvia and Ecuador; and most recently in Oslo as Counselor and Deputy Chief of Mission. She earned her BA cum laude in Biology and Political Science from Rice University, and an MS in International Environmental Health from the University of Texas School of Public Health. She speaks Swedish, Russian and Spanish. Rafe Pomerance, President Rafe Pomerance is a founder of the Climate Policy Center and President of CA-CP. From 1993-1999, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Environment and Development. Prior to joining the State Department, he spent eight years as a Senior Associate at the World Resources Institute. From 1975 to 1984, Mr. Pomerance was on the staff of Friends of the Earth, including four years as President. He began his work on climate change in 1978 while at Friends of the Earth. From 1973-1977, Mr. Pomerance was the coordinator of the National Clean Air Coalition. He was a founder and Chairman of the Board of American Rivers, and has also served as Chairman of the Board of the League of Conservation Voters. Mr. Pomerance earned a BA in History from Cornell University.
Nigel Purvis, Climate Policy Center Senior Fellow Nigel Purvis is a Senior Fellow at the Climate Policy Center and at the United Nations Foundation. From 2005-2007, Mr. Purvis served as Vice President for Policy and External Affairs at The Nature Conservancy, a leading global conservation organization. From 2002-2005, he was a senior scholar in the foreign policy program of The Brookings Institution, where he directed the Environment and Development Project. During this period, Mr. Purvis also was an international affairs fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. Previously, Mr. Purvis directed U.S. environmental diplomacy, including most recently as acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans, Environment and Science. He was a senior U.S. negotiator on climate change from 1998 to 2001. Early in his career, Mr. Purvis worked as an international lawyer at the U.S. State Department, as a securities attorney at the law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell and as a lecturer at Georgetown University. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School.
Dan received his master's degree from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and his bachelor's degree from Colby College. He studied in England, Brazil and Chile, and has completed internships on sustainable tourism in South Africa and technology transfer in India. He previously worked as an independent consultant for an international development consulting firm. Claire graduated from American University in Washington, D.C., with a bachelor's degree in environmental studies. In her first year at American University, she rejuvenated the student group Eco-Sense, and led the group in successful campaigns for a clean energy referendum and a green transportation policy. She became the Student Government's first Director of Environmental Policy, and persuaded the university president to sign the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. She also worked on AU's preliminary greenhouse gas inventory. Her efforts were recognized by her designation as a 2007 Udall Scholar and 2008 recipient of AU's award for Outstanding Service to the University Community. Casey is majoring in Environmental Studies and Political Science at American University (AU). Casey contributed to the successful passage of a clean energy referendum in her freshman year, and as Policy Director of AU's environmental organization, Casey wrote a Clean Transportation Policy that resulted in biodiesel in AU's shuttles and a bikeshare program. She wrote a Sustainable Procurement Policy and created an Office Eco-Certification Program at AU to encourage sustainable office behavior. In Spring of 2008, Casey assisted the Sierra Club with their 2008 election endorsements as an intern in the Political Division. She has also interned with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network.
Bob Sheppard, COO & Director of the Business Program Since joining CA-CP in January 2001, Bob has been responsible for developing and implementing the business sector program. He currently manages carbon management and reduction relationships with more than three dozen corporations from Maine to Pennsylvania, providing advice on emission inventories, energy audits, environmentally preferable purchasing, evaluation of on-site and renewable energy opportunities, alternative fuels/vehicles, stakeholder messaging, supply chain management, offsets and disclosure. Prior to joining CA-CP, Bob spent three years as Senior Social Research Analyst at Citizens Funds, where he was involved in several shareholder resolutions filed by the socially responsible mutual fund. Bob’s background includes a decade in the field of broadcast journalism with radio stations across New England, where he focused on waterfront development, municipal planning and the environment before embarking on a career in sales and marketing. A father of two college students and charter member of the Portsmouth Men’s Chorus, Bob is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine with a BS in Business Administration.
For more than 15 years, Abby Spring has been developing and implementing international policy and advocacy campaigns covering humanitarian and development issues. While working for the United Nations and World Bank she has overseen external relations with governments, multilateral organizations, the media, civil society groups, the private sector and foundations. In this capacity, she managed the international AIDS summit in Bangkok for UNAIDS, served as spokesperson and communications manager for the World Worldlife Fund – US during the Earth Summit in Brazil and has had extensive experience serving as the UN spokesperson in high profile emergencies around the world from North Korea to the Balkans. She started her career providing communications and political support on US presidential and state-wide campaigns.
Anne recently completed her accreditation as a green building consultant (LEED AP), and her doctorate in architectural history. Her doctoral research focused on local, state, and federal policies promoting energy efficient and historically sensitive renovations. Her academic interest in the energy and emission challenges involved with renovating pre-existing buildings, as well as the efficiency wisdom of much of the vernacular built environment, led her to pursue a more hands-on relationship with buildings. Anne’s work with the University of Chicago's Sustainability Council catalyzed an interest in the efficiency and emissions challenges of college campuses in particular. Anne is an active member of the US EPA Region 5’s Market Barriers to Green Development working group.
Roger has worked with CA-CP on specific projects and initiatives as a consultant since since 2000, and in 2006 joined us a full-time staff member. Principal of Stephenson Strategic Communications, Roger has over 15 years of experience providing public relations counsel and expertise to corporate management, government agencies and non-profit executives regarding internal communications, social marketing, coalition building and grassroots organizing, developing action strategies for public campaigns, branding and fundraising strategies. Roger is an accredited member (APR) of the Public Relations Society of America. As Interior representative to the White House Council on Environmental Quality from 1995-1999, he managed overall program and policy development for President Clinton’s American Heritage River initiative. Before serving in the Clinton administrations he was National Field Director for the League of Conservation Voters and later executive director of the LCV Education Fund at which time he managed the Florida Global Warming Education Project.
Katie is a Master's Candidate in Environmental Studies at Antioch University in New Hampshire with a focus in environmental education and advocacy. She is committed to addressing climate change issues, specifically in higher education institutitions and local communities, with sustainability and responsible lifestyles as the goal. As a fellow with CA-CP, Katie is working to design and implement the "10% Challenge," a program that encourages local businesses to committ to reducing their carbon dioxide emissions by at least 10%, in Keene. This project has been an ideal experience for Katie, as she is constantly finding ways to bridge the gap between education and advocacy, two tactics which are essential to the climate solution. Katie recieved her B.A. from Penn State University, where she led a climate change campaign that resulted in the university's committment to a 17% reduction in CO2 emissions and LEED certification of all new buildings.
Lynn came to Clean Air-Cool Planet in August 2007 with more than 10 years experience in a range of administrative roles and two years in Information Technology as a Desktop Support Analyst. She is accomplished in all Microsoft Office applications. As the Administrative Assistant, Lynn assists in multiple projects and supports the office in many functions. She graduated in 1993 from The Katherine Gibbs School in Boston with a specialty in the Secretarial Arts, and in 2003 graduated from Hesser College with her A.S. degrees in both Business Administration and Micro-Computer Support. In her free time, she likes to travel, read, hike, shop, and bother her cats, Chewey and Chowdah. Cameron researches global climate and environmental change. He reconstructs climate change in the past through the collection and analysis of ice cores from around the world. Over the past 20 years he has been involved in research expeditions to Nepal, China, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, the Canadian Arctic, Greenland, and Antarctica. Currently he is leading research programs to develop ice core records from glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau and in the Canadian Arctic, and is also involved in the NOAA-funded AIRMAP (Atmospheric Investigation, Regional Modeling, Analysis and Prediction) project, which seeks to improve understanding of New England's changing climate and air quality. In addition, he leads a team that is investigating the links between air quality and human health in New England. He received a B.Sc. in Geology (1984) from the University of Ottawa, an M.A. in Geography (1987) from Wilfrid Laurier University, and a Ph.D. in Geochemical Systems (1993) from the University of New Hampshire. In addition to climate research at UNH, Cameron serves on the board of the Kittery Land Trust and Seacoast Area Bicycle Routes, is an avid photographer, and spends his weekends living off the grid in a yurt in the White Mountains.
Greg is currently pursuing a Master's in Community Planning and Development at the Muskie School of Public Service, University of Southern Maine in Portland, ME. This summer, he will assist the City of Portland in implementing a pilot project focusing on the energy efficiency of municipal buildings. Greg has previously worked as a journalist, an educator, and an outreach coordinator in the environmental field. He holds a B.A. in Geology from Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
Brooks Yeager is the Executive Vice President of the Climate Policy Center. He held a number of senior environmental policy positions in the Clinton Administration, including leading global negotiations as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Environment and Development at the State Department from 1999 – 2000, and coordinating natural resource policy as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and International Affairs under Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt. From 2001 until 2005, Mr. Yeager was the Vice President of the Global Threats Program at World Wildlife Fund-U.S. Prior to his government service, he directed the Washington D.C. Office of the Audubon Society, led energy and wilderness conservation campaigns for the Sierra Club, and worked on the legislative staff of Rep. Jim Weaver (D-Oregon), specializing in environmental issues. As Principal of Birdwell Strategies and Senior Vice President of David Gardiner Associates, Mr. Yeager has also consulted widely with environmental and public interest organizations and foundations. Mr. Yeager received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University.
