Campuses for Climate Action

Universities, dedicated as they are to education and research, are ideally positioned to lead the way in addressing global warming – and all over the country, they're doing just that!

CA-CP’s Campuses for Climate Action program supports institutions in finding and demonstrating energy and global warming solutions.

Our Campus Climate Action Toolkit includes the CA-CP Campus Carbon Calculator, in use by more than 1,000 campuses across North America, as well as a practical framework for campus climate change leadership and action, technical resources and case studies.

CA-CP Fellowships for 2010

Six outstanding students served as Climate Fellows for Summer 2010.

American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment Logo

CA-CP is partnering with the American College and University President's Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) to offer in-depth workshops on how to use the CA-CP Campus Carbon Calculator(tm). These trainings will be offered three times in 2010, and information about current workshops can be found on the ACUPCC website.

The ACUPCC is a high-visibility effort to address global climate disruption undertaken by a network of colleges and universities that have made institutional commitments to eliminate net greenhouse gas emissions from specified campus operations, and to promote the research and educational efforts of higher education to equip society to re-stabilize the earth's climate.

Its mission is to accelerate progress towards climate neutrality and sustainability by empowering the higher education sector to educate students, create solutions, and provide leadership-by-example for the rest of society. Sign up for a training session today.

Furman University:
Piloting the Carbon Reduction Process on CampusFurman University

Across the country, colleges and universities are leading the way in taking up solutions to global warming, from reducing energy use and educating tomorrow’s leaders about energy and climate to leading research on new energy technologies.

Those most successful in integrating climate work into campus life, the curriculum, and the institution’s broader community do so based on a comprehensive plan of action, often starting with calculating the institution’s overall emissions in order to identify ways to cut carbon emissions from the physical plant.

Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina is one such school – and their unique approach to planning, resulting in climate action that is integral to their master plan, is a model for other colleges and universities, according to a new case study by Clean Air-Cool Planet (CA-CP), the leading non-profit working exclusively on solutions to climate change.

“Furman has taken a leadership position in crafting an inclusive and responsive process for gathering, evaluating, and integrating the best approaches to reduce energy use, save money, and cut greenhouse gases,” said Jennifer Andrews, who heads CA-CP’s campus program, “and we offer this case study in the hope that other campuses will be able to replicate this process and benefit from it. Furman is eager to help other campuses generate similar results.”

Claire Roby and Anne Stephenson preesented a two-day workshop at National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan, on Dec. 17-18, 2009. The session, entitled "Calculation, Reduction, and Planning of Carbon Footprint in Schools/Universities and Communities," resulted from a meeting between Professor Shin-Cheng Yeh and Claire Roby, CA-CP's Carbon Accounting Coordinator, at the ACUPCC Summit in Chicago in August.

Anne introduced the trend in low-carbon economy and life styles, and Claire discussed strategic planning and implementation of greenhouse gas inventory and reduction in campuses and communities. Anne and Claire provided feedback to attendees’ breakout discussions and then lead a discussion of next steps and the future of the school’s network.

Online Help for Greening the Campus

Second Nature launches the Campus Green Builder

Second Nature, with funding from the Kresge Foundation, launched an online resource for campuses engaged in sustainability efforts in their new buildings and renovations. The interactive website provides links to green building-related sites, directories of experts, and resources for funding and training. The free resources are particularly suited to colleges that have interest in green building but need expert guidance and help with funding for their sustainability efforts. For more information, please visit the Campus Green Builder. Developed by Second Nature (www.secondnature.org) and funded by The Kresge Foundation (www.kresge.org)

New Updates to the Campus Carbon Calculator
Clean Air-Cool Planet just launched Campus Carbon Calculator version 6.4. V6.4 will no longer consider 2008 or 2009 as "projection" years, but will now accept actual inventory data. Updates and fixes to bugs found in previous versions and the most recent round of updates to the EPA's e-grid emission factors are also included. While input data from the Campus Carbon Calculator v5 or earlier must still be manually transferred to v6, you will now be guided how to automatically import data from versions 6.0-6.3 using a series of macros. Because of the increased projection capabilities and the bug fixes, we strongly recommend updating to this new version, and we hope the automatic data transfer will minimize the inconvenience.  Download it here.
