Massachusetts Clean Powered Campuses

Clean Air–Cool Planet is collaborating with the Massachusetts Leading by Example (LBE) Program to promote renewable energy at Massachusetts state colleges, with the generous support of a Public Awareness grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative.

Innovation is a part of every college and university’s mission, making campuses natural incubators for clean power technologies. Massachusetts state campuses are leading the renewable energy revolution—installing their own green power sources, and training the future leaders in the clean energy workforce while serving as leaders wiLeading by Example logothin their communities. All 29 Massachusetts state college and university presidents have also signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), pledging their campuses to a goal of carbon neutrality.

In 2007, in part because so many Massachusetts campuses were already leading the way in renewable energy experimentation and installation, Governor Deval Patrick signed Executive Order No. 484. This established mandatory energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission reduction goals for all state-owned buildings. Read the Executive Order here.

In the first two years of its collaboration with MTC and LBE, CA-CP helped campuses determine viable renewable energy projects, complete feasibility studies, apply for financial aid and grant assistance, and create educational tours and displays.  Since 2008, our project has focused on the outreach and educational opportunities clean energy installations on campuses provide, in terms of curriculum development, community partnerships, and awareness-raising. There is a large demand for real-world renewable energy case studies and installation experience; CA-CP is working with Massachusetts public colleges to fill the void, inviting municipal leaders, neighbors, and students to learn from their installation experiences.

Read on to find out more about our work with Massachusetts public colleges, and learn about clean energy solutions for your campus.
