CCAN is the first grassroots, nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to fighting global warming in the Virginia/Maryland/DC region (www.chesapeakeclimate.org).  CCAN believes that engaging a growing number of concerned citizens and diverse groups in strategic campaigns is the key to improving public education on global warming and creates stronger pressure for legislative solutions to this growing crisis.   We have been successful in passing numerous state and local policies including the Maryland Healthy Air Act, state Renewable Portfolio Standards and Energy Efficiency Standards, and have built a strong grassroots base of hundreds of volunteers and dozens of local partner groups in the process.

The Campaign Director will oversee all of CCAN’s state and federal campaigns as implemented in Maryland, Virginia and DC. These campaigns emphasize grassroots outreach and public education.  The Campaign Director will work closely with state directors and organizers to create strategic plans for each state program as well as a strategic vision for CCAN’s new focus on federal climate legislation.  The Campaign Director will work with communications and policy staff to maintain good cooperation and collaboration throughout the organization.

Specific responsibilities include

  • Directly managing state and campus field directors vis a vis all state and federal work.
  • Facilitating the process to develop CCAN’s policy campaign, including selecting strategic policy vehicles at the state level, political power-mapping, organizing strategy, communications, etc.
  • Working with CCAN staff and coalition partners such as 1Sky to create and launch our new federal campaign, including selecting targets, messaging and tactics.

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is seeking a highly-qualified candidate for the position of international climate change policy advocate.  The advocate will have a key role in strengthening NRDC’s participation as a Non-Governmental Organization (“NGO”) in the development of the post-2012 international climate treaty regime.  Working under the direction of the Policy Director of NRDC’s Climate Center and the Director of NRDC’s International Program, the position’s responsibilities will include the following.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analyzing, developing, and presenting policy proposals on emission mitigation commitments and actions in developed and developing countries, forest issues, adaptation, and other matters;
  • Representing NRDC at international negotiations and other important international fora;
  • Building relationships with national governments delegates and with business and industry;
  • Coordinating with other NRDC programs and with other NGOs, research organizations, etc., working on international climate change.

The Advocate will assist NRDC in reaching its primary goal for the next two years, which is to help shape U.S. policy in order to successfully conclude a post-Kyoto treaty in December 2009.  The Advocate will also work with our partner NGOs from other countries to influence directly the international negotiations.  In the longer term (subject to funding), the Advocate will help to secure ratification and implementation of the new agreement in the U.S. and other countries.

QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate should have a relevant advanced degree (international relations, law, climate science, or climate policy) and 5-10 years experience in international climate policy or a closely-related field.   Experience with developing countries is highly desirable.  The candidate must have very strong analytic and communications skills.  A relevant foreign language would be helpful.  The candidate should have the initiative and capability both to work independently and to coordinate closely with others throughout NRDC engaged on climate change issues.
