This year’s keystone events take place Saturday, February 21, ‘Sustainable Slopes Day,’ which includes special outreach at 170 resorts across the country, along with an aggressive media push to spotlight the effects of global warming from both a business, recreational and environmental angle. Three local resorts participating will be Cranmore, Loon Mountain, and Waterville Valley. Come volunteer to talk to skiers and snowboarders about winter sports, global warming and climate solutions—and hopefully get some skiing of your own in on the side! For more information about the campaign, check out this 1-pager, or go to the website; to participate, contact NRDC’s Jo Krinn at 202.289.2382 for a day of fun on the slopes!
Scientists and citizen scientists from around the Northeast will gather February 26th at Yale University to learn about recent research on climate science and see a demonstration of climate change educational materials. They will also explore the needs and opportunities for creating an educational initiative to inform the people of Connecticut about the impacts of climate change and what they can do about it. Attending will be a cross section of representatives from state government, research institutions, and science centers to explore how best to inform the people of Connecticut about the science of climate change and what public and private organizations are doing to address it. The meeting is being sponsored by the New England Science Center Collaborative —a partnership between research institutions and science centers; Clean Air-Cool Planet, and the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.
The Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers (NEG/ECP) is hosting a symposium on impacts and adaptation. Geared toward scientists, policy-makers and stakeholders, this workshop is geared “to explore the scientific understanding of the environmental and economic impacts of climate variability on natural resources in the northeast” (courtesy of the NEG/ECP website) and to promote discussion of policy options and priorities that can be used in developing recommendations for the NEG/ECP Conference in meeting the goals of the regional climate change action plan. Check out the symposium web page to see the workshop agenda or to register.
CA-CP will once again be participating in the New York City’s two-day Earth Fair in Grand Central Terminal in April. This festival features art, music, and environmental education in Vanderbilt Hall, the main entrance into Grand Central from 42nd Street. Musical performances from children, folk and pop musicians will be featured throughout both days, as will interactive booths by various environmental companies and non-profit participants. Visitors can learn about the environment, try samples, buy products, and enjoy activities, including many for children.
