The Renewable Technology Evaluation Process

Which renewable energy technology is right for you?  Facilities professionals and campus planners know that many factors go in to choosing a renewable energy technology for campus.  An in-depth feasibility study must be conducted to evaluate all siting and technical considerations.  Even if these criteria are met, an installation still might not be economically feasible.  In the siting of renewable energy technologies there are few generalities; most installation considerations are specific to each campus.

This guide does not replace a feasibility study unique to your campus. It is instead a tool which highlights the major factors which could lead you down one renewable energy path vs. another.  It is intended for use for campus community members interested in renewable energy installations and curious about the process.  It will equip non-specialists with information to participate in installation discussions in an informed manner.

It is also intended for use by those in the thick of campus operations.  This tool visually documents the organic process of evaluating, eliminating, and choosing renewable energy technologies and will aid campus facilities professionals in communicating their role in creation of the clean energy campus.

Effective greenhouse gas reductions require communication and partnership across campus divisions and disciplines.  Renewable energy installations demand on-campus synergies and effective communication because so many students hope to study renewable energy, and so many campus and community members want to know more about on-site energy production in their own homes.

Using the Tree

As you answer questions in the survey, our software will analyze your options. When you click SUBMIT, you will be brought to a results page that will list the renewable energy sources that may work on your campus. When you click on an option, you will open a page about that technology, including siting considerations, financing options and a case study. Clicking on branches of the tree at the upper left of this page will bring you directly to a technology page.
