How does one conduct an campus-wide emissions inventory? Who is involved, what resources are needed, and how long will it take? This section of the toolkit aims to answer some of these important "process" questions. Basically, there are three elements to the greenhouse gas emission inventory process: Clean Air-Cool Planet's Calculator tool is designed to help make this process as structured and streamlined as possible. Using this tool, a campus-wide inventory can typically be completed by an undergraduate or graduate-level intern, student employee, or full-time employee of the institution in a semester or less. The resources required are pretty basic: a computer (with Microsoft Excel and Word), a phone and a place to store notes and materials. Also necessary, of course, is access to the relevant information, likely to come from a variety of sources including the campus facilities department, fleet managers, utility records, and the like. For this reason, some degree of institutional buy-in is very helpful in completing a campus inventory. |
