Basically, there are three elements to the greenhouse gas emission inventory process:

• Data collection
• Calculating greenhouse gas emissions
• Analyzing and summarizing the results

Clean Air-Cool Planet's Calculator tool is designed to help make this process as structured and streamlined as possible. Using this tool, a campus-wide inventory can typically be completed by an undergraduate or graduate-level intern, student employee, or full-time employee of the institution in a semester or less.

The resources required are pretty basic: a computer (with Microsoft Excel and Word), a phone and a place to store notes and materials. Also necessary, of course, is access to the relevant information, likely to come from a variety of sources including the campus facilities department, fleet managers, utility records, and the like. For this reason, some degree of institutional buy-in is very helpful in completing a campus inventory.
